The RVer's Bible is written in an engaging manner that isn't quite as simplistic as a "Dummy's" book...and I mean that in a good way. It covers a broad range of topics but tries to be realistic as well. While it's called a "Bible" the authors aren't trying to convert anyone. They are fairly upfront about the pitfalls of RVs, RV vacations, different kinds of RVs, etc. (I say this, never having owned or even spent a night in an RV). I appreciate that, as so many things I've read really just focus on how wonderful the lifestyle is, rather than trying to remind you that you might be buying something that has many plusses, but many potential costs and aggravations too.The book is well organized, and features a decent number of photos. Going through it, I feel, gave me a much more realistic idea of what I might be in store for if I buy an RV.So why not 4 or 5 stars? THE BOOK IS OLD. 1997. Technology has changed so much. Available options have changed. What folks want when they're on the road has changed so much (wi-fi, hi-speed internet, cable TV, etc.) and much of that is not addressed because it wasn't an issue. The book gives you plenty of good info, but there are many topics not touched on that I know about...so I worry about what I DON'T know about that the authors didn't know about either. I sure wish they'd take time to put out an updated edition. I'd buy it in a second, and I bet a LOT of others would too. It's a nice, engaging, thorough and seemingly honest book.
My husband and I are looking at getting a travel trailer. Our budget isn't big so it'll be a used one. So even though this book is copyrighted 1997, it had plenty of information we didn't know and hopefully will be able to use in finding/using an older trailer. I can see us especially using the trip checklists.There was some outdated info especially on technology. Th RVer's Bible is a sort of "fun read" if your aren't looking for up-to-date information. I bought he book used...it was well-used and then retired. This book doesn't even recognize Class B RVs, calling them van conversions or mini-RVs, and much of the advice, except for the more fundamental, common-sense (if you think about it) stuff, is not dated and sometimes invalid because of the antiquity.Evan so, I give credit to the writers for their skills in presenting a huge volume of information in a highly readable, pleasant style. Just don't expect to find a lot of usable information.
I am seriously considering buying an RV. I'm at that age where I have the time (and I hope the money). I had absolutly no idea that so much was involved in buying and operating an RV. This book (albeit a little outdated) covers in readable detail how one goes about buying an RV Used or Brand New. After reading the book it seems a better idea to buy a used unit first, before putting out the big bucks for a brand new rig..The book covers in detail what you need to look out for when inspecting a used rig(right down to what clothes you should wear if your doing a serious inspection). Their advice on buying a new unit is covered in detail as well. Do not figure that becuase its new its gonna function without any problems - ain't going to happen - . The time frame between looking for an RV and its actual purchase is sometimes up to 8 weeks., I didin't know this. Its not like buying a used or even a new car. The process is much more involved and is covered comprehensively in this book.Once youve got your unit the book then takes you through in detail what is involved in owning and operate the unit. I never in my wildest dreams figured on so much work. Its probably better to own a boat!!!The book is very readable and has humerous notations in it, that relieve any potential boredom when being read. After reading this book I have decided to revise my thinking on whether to buy an RV or not...
it a bit old so a lot of "call this company to get this info" rather then "go to this website", but does have some good for someone completely new to trailering, which i am. I agree with the other reviews, that they could remove about 1/2 the words and not lose anything. Also, i was after some details info on technical details like balancing a trailer, and there is a chapter on that but everything in there was either obvious to me or not useful, and i know almost nothing about trailers. it was just general statements about weights and levers without specifics. So next i need a more technical book, but for a newbie like me it was worth a few bucks.
