This was actually two novellas packaged together. The first, Watch Me Die, was the longer of the two. It was about a bit of a loser, a young guy working as a night security guard manning the guard shack at a gated community from midnight to 8. But everything changes when one of the tenants hires him to follow his wife to see if she is cheating. With no experience or training he relies only on detective novels and TV shows in his surveillance efforts. He makes a lot of mistakes, but feels his confidence growing and his life expanding. It's an amusing story that takes a more serious turn about midway. The second story, McGrave, was based on a possible TV pilot. It was a very amusing tale of an LAPD detective known as "Tidal Wave " McGrave because of his reputation for getting the bad guy but destroying everything in his path. Here he breaks up a major robbery but causes so much destruction and mayhem that he gets suspended. But he never gives up and follows the criminal leader to Germany. Berlin survived the bombing of WW2, but can it survive McGrave? This was a short but very fun story. Both tales were lighthearted and fun detective stories.
McGRAVE is a stylish, action-packed, and downright fun novella written by Lee Goldberg. The Afterword explains it “began as a television pilot†and the plotting, pacing and vivid cinematic prose give it an episodic television feel. A good thing in this case.John McGrave is an LAPD detective whose knack for destruction has yielded the nifty nickname, “Tidal Wave.†After foiling the attempted robbery of a 3,000 year-old chamber pot, McGrave is fired from the force. His termination is for a culmination of events, but the final straw is a soon to be filed $20-million lawsuit by one of L.A.’s wealthiest residents. Without a job, or even any prospects for a job, McGrave takes the first flight to Berlin trailing the only would-be toilet robber to escape L.A.McGRAVE is a sterling action yarn, at a perfect length, with a nicely rendered Berlin setting. The dialogue is witty, the characters fit nicely and play well together. John McGave is something like Lethal Weapons’ Detective Riggs (Mel Gibson) searching for, and finding, his Detective Murtaugh (Danny Glover) in a very unexpected locale mixed with a classic 1980s Stephen J. Cannell television series.
Watch Me Die was the first book in this volume and it was a neat and twisted mystery about a wannabe private eye working as a security guard. A little graphic with sexual content, but otherwise a nice, comical mystery utilizing some neat ideas.McGrave was the second and shorter title and it was also fun. McGrave is known as Tidal Wave McGrave in the LAPD and for good reason. One of the most destructive detectives in the field who craves action and holds nothing back to get his bad guys. Unfortunately, this leads to a suspension from the force and he travels to Germany to get the one that got away. There, he earns the respect of the police detectives, though not the female partner he is given, and he proves just as destructive in Germany as he was in Los Angeles-- to the delight of the German people.. A hilarious story with plenty of action. The only thing Goldberg writes better is his series based on the TV SHOW- Monk-- which are SUPERB!
I read MCGRAVE, the second novel in this twofer, first because I'd heard so much about it. It was hilarious. Just a short, punchy, funny, quick read of a crime actioner. Read it in one sitting one night when I couldn't sleep. I then went back and read WATCH ME DIE, the first book in the set. (The books are not linked to each other; you can read them independently; different characters, plots, settings, etc.) The first novel is another funny crime novel about a loser security guard who investigates a death using TV shows and old mystery novels as a guide. The final solution was actually powerfully plotted, and I was impressed. Not sure if there is a series with that character or not. But would read if there were. Mr. Goldberger, you are a genius!
This book has two shorter novels within it, Watch Me Die and McGrave. I liked McGrave, though the character was not particularly empathetic in my opinion. I really, really liked Watch Me Die, which apparently was also published as The Man With the Iron-on Badge. The main character is a bit of a loser in the beginning, but has an exciting and rather tragic coming of age. He is something of a doofus, but manages to actually learn from his experiences, and remains a sweet natured person somehow throughout the story. I found I missed his voice after finishing the book, and I'd like to know more about him and see how he grows as time goes on. Mr. Goldberg is a terrific storyteller! I've read The Walk a couple of times over the years, and enjoyed it equally both times. Looking for more books by him for my Kindle!
Watch Me Die is the longer novella and well worth reading. Harvey Mapes, security guard turned detective, has a tongue in cheek, devil-may-care attitude but below that façade man's humanity is fully evident. Detective books and shows may have impressed him while he tried to pass the time of day as a security guard but they are found to be a poor interpretation of reality when he takes on the job of detective. This was an easy read, almost a literary romp, but the conclusion was totally unexpected yet very fitting. I was surprised yet satisfied.McGrave was quite brief yet totally 'American' in attitude. No demolition was too grande, no outcome too unreal, no challenge too overwhelming and no coincidence too bizarre. This was the everyday hero on loan to the German PD, the detective who relied totally on instinct and his own innate ability to survive any outcome. His language was at times crude but always self-serving, and those who had the chance to know him developed a grudging respect for his actions. This man lived his own dream -- and who can fault him for that?This was my introduction to Lee Goldberg and a very entertaining one. I look forward to reading his other works.
