About the Author
Kirk R. Johnson is a paleobotanist and the Sant Director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. He is the host of two recent PBS series, Making North America and The Great Yellowstone Thaw. He has written ten books including Prehistoric Journey, Cruisin' The Fossil Freeway, and Ancient Wyoming. Ray Troll is an artist who has illustrated ten books, including Cruisin' the Fossil Freeway, Sharkabet, Rapture of the Deep, and Planet Ocean. He and his wife, Michelle, own and operate the Soho Coho Gallery in Ketchikan, Alaska.

This is a marvelous book for anyone interested in fossils, the West Coast, art, science, or life in general. Kirk Johnson is a wonderful science writer. He brings the natural history of the West Coast to life through vivid and entertaining stories from his own life and the lives of the paleontologists he encounters and remembers. Ray Troll's beautiful illustrations and eclectic sense of humor bring the stories to life in color. I will treasure this book forever and share it with all of my friends, family, and future children!
Fun and creative approach to the fossil records of the West Coast of the US, part travel memoir and part excuse to spread the amazing marine focussed artwork of Ray Troll. Lots of little gems of information about mostly extinct life on the West Coast of the US. Fun way to learn about paleontology, and could be a good book for chapter book reading children interested in fossils, particularly if they live on the West Coast, as it does include a lot of encouragement for amateurs.
This was an excellent read and full of great information about the fossils of the ancient west coastline
