I can’t make up my mind on this volume. Basically, this arc is a battle of machismo between Barry Allen and Wally West (and newcomer Wallace West) and ties into a whole bunch of previous and ongoing storylines and crossovers. Overall, I like the Flash family and am glad that DC seems to be bringing back (or at least alluding to) elements of the pre-Flashpoint DCU, and I'm really grateful that DC has finally picked a regular artist to cover the complete arc. However, as others note, the characterization does not always seem true to “my†version of the characters, and I’m not very excited by DC’s further messsing with tried and true continuity to try something new. In the end, with the teasers, I’m curious enough to pick up the next volume, but I fear it, too, may not impress. (Do also note, all the work in the series on Wally might be for naught given soloicitations for the Heroes in Crisis series.)A final warning, be aware that Amazon stinks at shipping and packaging comics. This is yet another book that arrived damaged due to oversized packaging. As the phone shows, the book was bent along the spine and bruised along the corner. Par for course, I’m afraid.
Just what my son wanted and it has multiple issues so well worth the price!
Truly one of the best things in the world, for all those who believed and knew. This book is for you, to all those up and coming speedster, this is for you too.
Awesome book.
This volume really highlights what I don't like about this Flash run. Both Barry and Wally are both shown to be petty and selfish. Neither of them are really heroes at all in this. That's been my problem with Barry Allan with in general as part of the New 52. He constantly does whatever he wants without thinking about the consequences. Wally West is my Flash after reading those fantastic Mark Waid and Geoff Johns runs in the 90's. The way he grows from a selfish screw-up into a noble hero that ultimately surpasses Barry Allen is fantastic. None of that is on display here. Yes, Williamson may reference some of that run, but he can't seem to grasp Wally's character at all. And then there's Wallace West who seems to be bipolar, with his love/hate relationship with Barry. His last scene in this story was especially dumb. The book ties in with what Scott Snyder is doing over in Justice League and I can say I'm not a fan. These other forces are unnecessary and just silly.
The Flash Vol 8: Flash War describes the human feelings driving some of the Flash Family to despair. The holiday season is when you get together with your family and remember those who were taken too soon. The Flash Family is no different. Wally has the holiday blues and is missing his family especially his twin children, Jai and Irey. Hunter Zolomon, aka Zoom, exploits Wally’s feeling to his own ends. Like most, or at least my, family gatherings, the relatives begin to squabble. However, if you’re a superhero, that leads to a Flash War.There isn’t much action in The Flash Vol 8: Flash War. It is solely about feelings and emotions. While I like the change of pace, I missed an obvious villain like Gorilla Grodd. However, the art is as bright and clear as always. This volume does set up some interesting things for the next volume, Heroes in Crisis. 4 stars! Thanks to DC Comics and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Wow is there a lot that happens in this volume! Okay, I know. I really shouldn’t be surprised by that, considering it’s the Flash and all. But still! I’m always impressed by how much they’re able to fit into just a few issues. This is one of those volumes you want to read if you’re looking to see multiple Flash characters as well as other DC characters all interacting with one another. Personally, these are my favorite plots. I love watching the different teams interact and problem solve. This was an intense volume, so consider yourself warned. The title of the volume probably warned you well enough though. Then again, considering how many alternate Flashs there are, it may actually not be all that telling. If you’ve been following either The Flash or Titans then you already have a pretty good idea of some of the trauma that Wally West has been going through as of late. It must be so incredibly rough to lose your memories. Worse to have everyone forget you. Being stuck somewhere in between? That’s where Wally is. Though he kind of transitions between them. It isn’t a great life, but that seems to be the sort of luck he’s been given. So it makes sense that eventually that mess would come around to bit him, and everyone else, in the butt. I’m just surprised it too what, at least six volumes? Though I have to admit that I do love it when they let a plot lie in wait for a while. It tends to add to the impact. There were so many heartbreaking moments in this volume, all thanks to Wally and the memory/alternate life he lived. I honestly don’t know how I’d feel if I were him, or what any of his friends and family could really say or do to help him. It’s not like there are magic words that will make it all better. Much as we wish that wasn’t the case.It was fascinating bouncing back and forth between the present and the time altered future. I loved seeing what changed and how. The whole butterfly effect in action, you know? Even though it absolutely made it a little harder to bear.Barry Allen is a great Flash. He’s human, and humans make mistakes. I love superheroes that have flaws, it makes them more interesting. It sometimes feels like everyone holds Barry to this impossible standard, so inevitably they end up getting let down. It seems harsh, but it also allows for the complicated character that Barry is. One more thing before I finish this review. I know that the volumes are typically behind the issues, which means this conclusion came out months and months ago. But I’m fairly certain that the final part of the volume ties into what happened in the (spoiler warning for a new current series) first Heroes in Crisis series. Which I’ve been reading. I can’t even begin to tell you how much that hurts my heart. If you’ve been reading the series, or at least seeing the outrage about it online, then you have a good idea of what I’m talking about. I’m looking forward to the next volume of the Flash. I really want to see how Barry manages to patch up all the relationships in his life, and what will end up happening with this new version of Cold. I guess I’ll have to be patient in the meantime…
