I am stunned at the positive reviews and the bookstore success of this book. Vilas struck me as the worst table companion to be stuck with at a dinner party. "I, I, I...". "me... me... me..." seems to be his relentless theme. He is in love with his own voice, his own pronouncements, declarations, resounding statements, while frequently sententious and pretentious. He does not always seem to examine what he says delivering verdicts of stunning emptiness or banality. "La muerte impide la continuación del envejecimiento..." is one of my favourites but there are similar examples on almost every page. Over 158 chapters he creates a kind of fugue with recurring themes or variations on themes, ageing, death, his divorce, his alcoholism, his failed relationship with his sons, but most of all the exaltation and poeticisation of his parents, presenting them in a way I very much doubt they themselves would empathise with. As the Bard put it: "Methinks the (writer) doth protest too much." It is not long before you recognise the poeticisation of his parents as a kind of narcissitic self-poeticisation, unending. And there is no humour in this book. His practice of giving nicknames of famous composers to his family is next to pointless and quickly irritating. He is very uneven. An encounter with boxer Perico Fernández is promising but is spoiled by the intrusion of the narrator's relentless egocentrism. A page on the death of actor Robin Williams is ill-advised. And a reflection on the German Wings air tragedy is indecent. 20% in I was overcome with tedium, half-way through I wanted to abandon ship... only my determination to finish a book kept me going. So what are its saving graces??? I identified with the narrator, being about the same age, and sharing some of his life experiences... He made me remember my own parents, even while I saw his cloying reminiscence and recollecting as grist to his narcissistic mill... And I liked his pungent provocative commentaries as he skewered fatuities and vacuities, everything from tv quiz shows to relationships to society politics and history, royalty, God, and even existence... While I concluded these commentaries were at bottom strategies to gather attention and shake the reader out of inevitable lethargies. This book is so overly long and overly tedious. But it is its relentless and all absorbing narcissistic egocentrism and exaggerated self-poeticisation which is its most offputting quality. If I am invited to any future dinner party I shall not accept unless I am assured Vilas will not be my table partner... I would not willingly endure him again.
Desconcertante.
