As I found, questions I had for starting a nonprofit required a lot of additional research that wasn't covered in the book.In the ideal world, there won't be issues when you want to create a nonprofit to accomplish approved purposes. There is no substitute for looking at the most recent IRS Form 1023 and reading the IRS Instructions for Form 1023. Also, Form 990 and the Instructions for Schedule L are mandatory reading. In the real world, decisions are sometimes a lot more complicated than one expects.By first going through the above forms and instructions to them, one is then usually prepared to begin a deliberative process concerning the issues that matter. The book covers a lot of points that won't matter to somebody in the process of creating a nonprofit, and it can't possibly cover all the nuances that can arise during the process.Therefore, I think it's a good idea to get this book for the purpose of reading generally about starting a nonprofit. At the same time, I don't think of it as a tool that will be the one and only resource to take somebody through the process. The author does a lot of hand holding, which is especially helpful when it comes to filing your 1023 with the IRS which establishes your tax exempt status as a 501(c)(3) organization.So here is what you will get out of the book:1)Should you form a non-profit or a regular business?He discusses the advantages and disadvanges of a non-profit.2)501(c)(3)- What is it, do you qualify?He goes in to detail on if your organization's purpose and activities qualifies you as a 501(c)(3) non-profit with all of its tax advantages. This is a key and important consideration. He also goes into the detail about the structure of your organization- the directors, officers, and how officer's/director's salaries and family affliations might affect non-profit status. He gives plenty of examples, which I found very helpful.(3)Step by Step filing of articles of incorporation with the State of California.He gives sample articles of incorporation for "public benefit corporations", which a general category as well as religious corporations. He give plenty of information on how to modify these articles to your individual needs.(4)Step by Step creation of Bylaws. Again, discussion of each point in the bylaws with suggestions for modification to suit your needs.(5)Filing for tax exempt status with the State of California and the IRS. This is potentially the most daunting part of the process, but I found that he takes you through it slowly, step by step, to make it as painless as possible although I am sure it is still a somewhat painful process.(6)Finally he takes you through how to keep corporate records, and conducting your first board of directors meetings.All of the forms, sample bylaws, articles of incorporation, IRS instructions, etc. are found on the CD rom that comes with the book.What the book doesn't provide:--Some practical and common questions did remain unanswered. For example, Lets say you pour seed money into a non-profit corporation, from your own pocket, to pay for travel, meetings, conferences and other promotional activity. Is this tax deductable to you?--Doesn't offer very much guidance of where there are free university and other resources for new non-profits. This would have been very helpful.Perhaps both of these like that are beyond the scope of the book.If you are looking for a book that will give you an very good understanding the structure of a non-profit corporation and a practical step by step guide of how to form one and fill out the proper paperwork, I highly recommend this book.
I and some school friends decided to start a non-profit in California, but none of us has a business or legal background. Fortunately, this workbook has all the necessary steps and describes the appropriate forms to go with them. Better yet, there are tips, examples, and suggestions to help guide your selection of those options which are relevant to your organization and make sure you've done everything you need to. Our experience thus far has been good, and this book has been a major contributor to that effort. Note that this book is updated frequently to keep abreast of changes in procedures or forms by the State of California; the current edition is #15. I naively bought an older version, but a website link is provided where one can check for any changes since each edition has been printed. Even the current edition will be outdated within a year or two; but by virtue of the website you can keep whatever edition you buy up-to-date.

This book is amazing! My husband and I are starting a nonprofit organization called Purrfectly Pawssible. Which is an animal rescue and because of this book we did not need an attorney. This book has everything you need and has even better recommendations in it for more books to help on the same topic, like fundraising. It breaks everything down so you can understand and explains things on all the forms you need that an average person would not normally understand. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting up a non profit.
I found this book to be very informative and written with clear and concise language. Also the sample forms with descriptions and author's suggestions are a great resource for anyone wishing to start a non-profit organization. Happy with my purchase.
