My husband and I read this book when we were engaged. At first, I didn't think it would be helpful but it was a great way to ask easy and difficult questions about myself and to each other. After reading this book, we read two other marriage counseling related books and I recommend this book the most.To summarize what I found personally beneficial:1) Not overwhelming:I liked how it's organized by questions. Rather than explaining a lot of contents, it was easy to apply to real life and seemed more practical.2) Good way to get to know your spouse:You can never say you know someone perfectly well. Reading this book together with my husband helped me to understand him more3) Quality time:What we did was that we read each chapter a week (not together, separately) and set a time to share and discuss what we liked and what our thoughts on each topic.I particularly recommend to couple who are planning a wedding. Planning a wedding can be stressful and this may help you to bring the focus back to your relationship with your spouse from an event planning :)
I am a relationship coach. I read hundreds of tips and books on relationship. When it comes to relationships, most of us have illusion to avoid conflicts. But the real key is to skillfully communicate. Two of my favorable tips from this book are: 1- The most important characteristic of a marriageable person is the habit of happiness. 2- Four styles of miscommunication from family therapist Virginia SatirThere are some other tips that most of us are familiar with such as the differences of men and women and so on.
This book has added SO MUCH to my our marriage that we now purchase it as a wedding gift whenever we find out someone is getting married.. It's an easy to read game changer & gives you a fighting chance for a long lasting & fulfilling marriage, as what should be the intention!!
Good advice and solid. My wife and I are both really active in our walks with the Lord and were having the serious talks of all things relationship like on our 2nd date, so we did find that a lot of this book was stuff we'd already gone over and wasn't challenging us as we walked towards marriage.I think it's a fantastic read for most couples as they walk towards marriage and premarital counseling.
The authors seems to assume people are headed into the marriage thinking everything is sunshine and roses when you're married. This was not my circumstance. I knew marriage was not going to be a golden ticket to happiness. It was somewhat helpful, but nothing replaces a good marriage counselor. Every relationship is unique and this book feels a bit one-size-fits-all. The issues in my particular circumstance were not covered in this book, but a real living, breathing marriage counselor was the solution.
I have a degree in psychology and during my studies in marriage and family counseling I was assigned this book to read. I found it a more valuable resource on the subject than any other book I've read. I am a pastor now and give these to couples who are contemplating marriage.
The best pre-marriage resource available today. Filled with and based on clear and simply-stated principles. It's obvious the Parrotts have decades of experience helping couples before and during their marriages; and the advice they give is given in love. I like how the book is arranged around the 7 myths about marriage (what we think) as opposed to external factors like many other pre-marital resources (ie, family history).I highly recommend this resource to engaged couples and can see its usefulness for already-married couples as well. It gains even more traction when paired with the SYMBIS online assessment.
Wonderful book...I suggest finding a church (even if your not religious) that hosts the course (video, discussion, and assessment in addition to the book). A lot of states will waive your marriage license if you take this course (not just read the book...the course with it). Also Couples who go to pre-marital counseling/groups see the benefit and are more likely to reach out for support in their marriage...should the need arise.
