I'm not a great free motion quilter, but I have taught myself to do pretty acceptable straight line quilting with my walking foot. I purchased this book hoping for some great new ideas and better ways to do walking foot quilting. There are a few good ideas in this book, and it is certainly well illustrated and has clear directions. I like a bit less modern style in my quilting, love traditional, so this book which is mostly for modern quilts, didn't offer me much of what I was looking for. Guess I'll just have to come up with stuff on my own. I wish I had not purchased this book, but for those who love modern styles, this would probably be a really good reference book.
This is an all encompassing book on what you need to know to successfully machine quilt using your walking foot. Jacquie covers testing and getting to know your walking foot and marking the foot so that you can turn/pivot precisely where you want/need. Spray basting the quilt sandwich is discussed and Jacquie then heat sets the adhesive to remove potential wrinkles/bubbles you can get as you quilt. (I had never heard anyone talk about heat-setting the temporary spray adhesive before but I'll try it soon.) I love the part about using the walking foot with decorative machine stitches. (Who would have thunk it!) I recently used my walking foot and stitched a decorative wavy line (would that be called a serpentine?) to quilt the center of a Christmas table topper that had many 2.5" squares that didn't quite match up to one another (I was finishing up an UFO from previous years). I stitched right over the top of the seam lines. The decorative stitch is beautiful and you can no longer tell that the squares are wonky. I may not have thought of doing that stitch or using my walking foot if it weren't for Jacquie.Even though most of the information in the book is also discussed in Jacquie's three Craftsy classes, I really like this book because pictures and instructions and is a great reference book.Jacquie is into modern quilting whereas I tend to make mostly traditional quilts. Even with that, I find the techniques very useful.
I love this book! After trying and trying to free-motion quilt, with nothing but frustrating results, I tried quilting with a walking foot. I had looked at other books on the subject, but Jacquie's is the most user-friendly by FAR! And, guess what! I completed my first small quilt following her tips and inspiration! I am really happy with the results. I hope to finish piecing another quilt this month and will quilt it with a walking foot too.It would have been a bonus if the publisher had used spiral binding for this book so that it would lay flat when opened. I took my copy to a local printing company and the cut off the spine and spiral bound it--for less than $5. Now it's perfect.
I bought this book a couple months ago but just started reading it last night. It has a lot of really good information and helpful hints in the book. While I'm not a novice sewist, my quilting experience is limited and I'm looking forward to using her ideas for practicing and eventually using the stitches in a quilt and I'm hoping to do more than one! I especially like her suggestion to make a Stitch Journal for future works. I consider this book money well-spent.
Great book for anyone who's got a bit of anxiety about quilting their quilt. The Walking foot provides a means to quilt that virtually ANYONE who can use a sewing machine can master! Great photography and ideas, but good edit for those of us who still like a good read to go along with our pictures! Thanks Jacquie!
EXCELLENT.A perfect addition to my quilting library. Very thorough step by step in the process of machine quilting. Many designs are explained in detail with very creative ways to get that "finished and professional image':. Free motion quilting just does not work for me and this text and technique is my alternative to long arm quilting. I'll just quilt it myself and this book is an excellent resource. Thanks Jacquie
Jacquie Gering was the first person to teach me that "Free Motion quilting isn't the only way to finish a quilt." She's a great teacher, both in-person and on Craftsy, and this book is a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in doing their own quilting on a domestic machine. Great resource, well-written and beautifully illustrated!
I took her craftsy class and was amazed. When I discovered this book was available, I jumped at the chance to buy it. Have been looking over all the info and love this book. Has tons of pictures and is inspiring.
This book gave me courage and knowledge to finally try quilting with my sewing machine rather than hand tying my quilts. I had considered paying someone to free motion quilt for me but the cost was an issue.. Thank you Jacquie for writing this book. I used your "shattered" pattern for my first quilt and it's turned out beautifully. The best part is, I can use my current sewing machine and walking foot. I also appreciate the explanation of the different needles and threads. You would think as a long time sewer I knew all of that but it was a surprise to me to finally learn what those needle numbers were all about. :-) My next attempt will be to use one of my decorative stitches but honestly, the straight stitch is clean and simple and was perfect for this quilt.
